What is Media Literacy?

Media Literacy broken down, media stands for the descriptive of internet, music and tv, literacy means to read/create.  Some points made in these videos is the fact that people spend 10-12 hours a day with media.  It is also pointed out that medias main aspect is money over morals.  Media has become shameful, it is mostly all for cooperate gain therefore they will do anything to gain what they want even if it is bad for the consumer.  Many people wish to fight the cooperate onslaught and maximize the good in the media.

Five questions on what media literacy is are; who sent this message? who is the author? Secondly what techniques are used to attract attention? As well as, how might the people view this message? Fourthly, what values, lifestyles and point of view are emitted in this message? Finally, why was this message sent? The answerers to these questions are often complex and usually involve personal gain on the promoters end.

Another point made in the video was what can teachers do?  Many teachers are clueless about racism, sexism, homophobia as well as classism.  There are no respect towards differences.  Students need to be taught about the issues, especially social issues so that they are able to point them out in toxic media.  Teachers must have an advance on problematic isms.

We need to learn how to integrate our ideas, we are all humans and therefore are equal and we must work together to fuse the best of what we have.  We cannot segregate.  People are afraid of what is different, so if we make what is different, the normal than we have something to focus on towards a brighter future.

We must teach our children well, we need to stop addictions to materialistic items, we need to fight junk media that is promoting obesity.  Our youth is addicted to media, we need to make it good media and stop toxic media that promotes unhealthy habits and unhealthy treatment towards other people such as commercials promoting the degrading of women.
